  Zanzibits, a short introduction

We have created a platform for Zanzibar youths with potential and motivation to learn a multimedia specialty to both facilitate their career development as well as their interaction with youths across the world via means of multimedia and film making.

In other words, we promote positive change in the lifestyles of less privileged youths by equipping them with film and multimedia skills and promoting cross-cultural exchange.

We uphold the following values:

Mutual respect without discrimination on account of race, ethnic background, gender or religious persuasion;

Cross-cultural appreciation/interaction;

Creativity and;

Quality electronic equality (e-quality)

The initiator

The main motivation of the Zanzibits project is to reduce the creative and technical gap between Zanzibar/Tanzania/East Africa and the rest of the world, while making sure that the cultural integrity of the local youths is not harmed. Guy Mullens has been active in the IT/Web development field for over ten years, and he thought the time right to use his knowledge and financial background to initiate such a project.

Guy has been coming to Zanzibar for more than four years now, and has moved there in the beginning of 2007. Besides the Zanzibits project, Guy is working in the tourism, ICT and educational sectors. Guy’s CV is found in the appendix of the business plan.

It all started with a plan to build a cybercafé on the east coast of Zanzibar. As an extra incentive, Guy planned to give some free classes to the local youths, in order to share knowledge, as his background is IT/Internet related. After having written down some ideas, Guy went to the ministry of Education, to see if he could get any support or help with this. The Ministry of Education sent Guy to their sister ministry, the Ministry for Women, Children and Youth Development, for help. There, he met with the Director of Youth affairs and the Chief Secretary, who stated the urgent need for such projects, especially for youths.

This, in combination with a good working relationship with Butterfly Works (initiators of the Nairobits project), the Zanzibits initiative was launched. The planned opening of the school is set for march 2008.
